Working in partnership with The Royal Marsden – a world-leading cancer centre specialising in cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education – the new Maggie’s Centre is located within the hospital grounds and further enhances the patient care on offer. The centre will be there for anyone and everyone affected by cancer, offering an enhanced and unique evidence-based programme of support delivered in an uplifting, non-clinical environment.
The centre has been developed by Ab Rogers Design (ARD) and focuses on creating the best visitor experience possible. Formed of five escalating terracotta clad volumes, the building wraps around a central courtyard. The design creates plenty of communal and private spaces that can be utilised for many different uses, whilst the clever specification of sliding doors means that the rooms can be opened up to create larger spaces. The building is flooded with natural light and views over the beautiful gardens, designed by world-renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf.
Shadbolt were asked to assist with the project, manufacturing and supplying a host of bespoke FSC® certified doors to the building. Factory primed doors and doorsets were supplied ready to be finished on site to match the colour scheme of the interior. These included fire performance rated doors and sliding doors. In addition, a crown cut American walnut feature door was manufactured and supplied for the entrance door to the centre. The door features 30 no. American walnut solid hardwood slats let in to both faces of the door, providing a truly impressive entrance.
